Sending DMs

How to fix a DM that failed to send

Find out why a single-profile DM did not go out, check what happened to your credit and send it again safely. It takes about five minutes.

6 stepsUpdated October 2026

Before you start

  • The extension open on the profile where the DM failed
1

Read the message in the panel

DMpro tells you why. The common ones are:

  • “Auto-DM failed: [reason].” The page did not let DMpro send, for example the message button was missing or the account does not accept DMs.
  • “We couldn’t confirm the DM to @username went out. Check the chat before sending again.” The page did not answer, so the DM may or may not have been sent.
  • “Not sent: this message was written for @name, but the tab now shows @other.” The tab moved to another profile.
  • “Auto-DM failed: Please switch to an Instagram or TikTok tab to send direct messages”: the active tab is not Instagram or TikTok.
2

Check the conversation before you resend

Open the person’s DMs on Instagram or TikTok and look at whether your message is there. If it is, you are done. Single-profile DMs are never retried automatically, so you decide whether to send again with Generate or Fill in.

If you cannot tell whether the DM went out, check the chat first. Sending again can deliver the same message twice to a real person.
3

Understand what happened to your credit

  • AI Prompt mode: the credit was used when the AI wrote the message, so a failed send does not give it back. If the AI itself failed to write, you were not charged.
  • Your Own DM mode: the credit is taken right before the send and given back when the DM fails (“Your credit was given back.”). When DMpro cannot tell whether the DM went out, it keeps the credit, because the DM may have been sent.
  • A DM that failed but was delivered by Auto Email counts as sent.
4

Work through the common causes

  • Signed out of Instagram or TikTok: sign in again in the same Chrome.
  • The profile does not accept your DMs, for example private or restricted messaging: skip it.
  • The page changed or loaded slowly: reload the page and click Refresh in the panel.
  • Auto Send DMs is off: then nothing is sent by design. Check the switch on the main screen.
  • No credits: in Your Own DM mode, “You’re out of credits” appears and nothing is sent.
5

Check for a platform restriction

If sends suddenly start failing after working, Instagram or TikTok may have restricted your account. DMpro does not detect this. Stop sending for now, pause any running campaigns and see the guide on recovering after an Instagram block.

6

Update the extension or send by copy and paste

Platform redesigns can break sending until DMpro updates. Open chrome://extensions, turn on Developer mode and click Update, or reinstall DMpro from the Chrome Web Store. While you troubleshoot, turn Auto Send DMs off, click Copy To Clipboard and paste the message into the person’s DMs yourself.

Tips

  • In a campaign, a failed DM is marked Failed with its reason and is not retried. A DM that was being sent when Chrome closed is marked failed as “interrupted, not resent”, so nobody gets the same DM twice.
  • If sends keep failing, contact DMpro support with your account email, the profile address, a screenshot of the message and your Chrome version.
  • “The DM didn’t go through, so DMpro emailed @username at [address] instead” means Auto Email delivered your message by email.

If something goes wrong

Auto Send DMs is on but nothing is sent at all.

Confirm the switch is on, the tab is an Instagram or TikTok profile in the same Chrome where you are signed in, and the panel shows the same profile as the tab. Click Refresh, then try again.

The panel says “DM already sent to @username – Duplicate messages prevented!”

You already messaged this person, so DMpro sent nothing and used no credit for an own DM. If you want to message them again, use Generate & send again at the “Already messaged” prompt.

The Generate button does nothing.

Check what the panel says. “You’re now on @name, but DMpro still has @other loaded” means click Refresh. “Please login first before generating messages” means sign in. The upgrade window means you are out of credits. In AI Prompt mode, also check that a prompt is active.
