How to connect VS Code to contactID

Add contactID to GitHub Copilot in VS Code as an HTTP MCP server and use it in Agent mode. It takes about 3 minutes.

Before you start

A contactID account you can sign in to
VS Code with GitHub Copilot, to use Copilot Chat in Agent mode

Open AI Assist and copy the address

In the dashboard at https://contactid.brandid.app/, open Account in the sidebar and choose AI Assist (MCP). Open the Apps tab. On the right is the panel Connect an AI app.

Press Copy next to the address, which is:

https://contactid.brandid.app/mcp

Under Steps for your app, press VS Code to see the steps for that app.

Run MCP: Add Server

In VS Code, open the Command Palette and run MCP: Add Server. Choose HTTP, paste the address https://contactid.brandid.app/mcp and name it contactid.

Start the server and sign in

Start the server when VS Code asks. A browser window opens on a contactID page. Sign in. If you signed in more than 10 minutes ago, enter the 6-digit code contactID emails you.

You always sign in on contactID’s own page. The AI app never sees your password.

Choose what VS Code may do and press Allow

Choose View only, View and manage or Custom. If you are unsure, start with View only. Then press Allow.

contactID recognizes VS Code when it signs in through its own website and marks it Verified. If the page asks you to tick I trust this app and I started this connection myself, tick it only if you did start it. If a connection page opens that you did not start, press Cancel.

Use Copilot Chat in Agent mode

Open Copilot Chat, switch it to Agent mode and ask something that only looks, for example:

Show me my Agents

Then open Account, AI Assist (MCP), Apps in the dashboard to see the app under Connected apps.

Tips

Anything that reaches people or spends credits asks you first, and nothing is sent unless you start sending or say yes.
Start with View only and widen access later with Change access on the Apps tab.
Sending and checking websites happen on your computer. For an AI app to add websites or send, keep Chrome open with the contactID extension signed in to the same account, and keep Let AI apps use contactID on this computer on in Settings, Sync & AI access. If something goes wrong

contactID does not connect in VS Code

Check the address is exactly https://contactid.brandid.app/mcp and the type is HTTP. Start the server again when VS Code asks and sign in in the browser.

I do not see contactID in Copilot Chat

Use Copilot Chat in Agent mode, and make sure the contactid server is started.

A request says it cannot reach my computer

Open Chrome with the contactID extension signed in to the same account, and check Let AI apps use contactID on this computer is on in Settings, Sync & AI access.
