AI Billing

AI Wallet

Prepaid AI billing with Stripe top-ups, auto-recharge, per-request and daily budgets, and a free daily allowance. How signID charges for AI usage.

The AI Wallet is signID’s prepaid billing system for AI usage. Instead of a fixed monthly AI subscription (like ChatGPT Plus), you fund a balance and pay per use.

How it works:

  • Top up the wallet with a Stripe payment (typically $5 to $100 per top-up)
  • Each AI action (summary, chat, risk review, drafting) consumes tokens, charged in micro-dollars
  • The balance decreases as you use AI; you top up again when it runs low

The wallet applies to both Document AI and the AI Contract Studio.

AI usage is metered in tokens, roughly corresponding to fragments of words. Every AI call consumes input tokens (the prompt + document context) and output tokens (the AI’s response).

signID charges based on the underlying LLM provider’s token pricing, plus a small platform markup. The markup covers infrastructure, orchestration, retrieval indexing, and margin, meaning it’s not a random surcharge, it reflects the value signID adds on top of raw model calls.

You can see cost per action in the AI conversation log (Settings → AI). Typical costs:

  • Document summary: a few cents per document
  • Grounded chat question: usually under 10 cents
  • Contract Studio draft: 25 cents to a dollar depending on complexity

Every workspace gets a free daily AI allowance, meaning you can use AI without touching your wallet up to a small daily cap.

The allowance:

  • Resets every 24 hours at midnight UTC
  • Applies to all AI features across the workspace
  • Amount depends on your plan (Business and Enterprise have higher allowances)
  • Does not roll over, unused allowance expires

Once the allowance is exhausted, AI actions draw from your prepaid wallet balance.

Tip. Light users (occasional summaries, a chat here and there) may never need to top up the wallet. The daily allowance covers casual usage.

To add funds, go to Settings → AI → Wallet and click Add funds. Choose an amount:

  • Preset options: $5, $10, $25, $50, $100
  • Custom amount (within the $5 to $100 range for a single top-up)

You’re redirected to Stripe Checkout to complete payment. The funds appear in your wallet immediately after Stripe confirms the payment.

Note. AI wallet top-ups are Stripe-only. PayPal is not supported for wallet top-ups (though PayPal is supported for main subscriptions, see Plans & Billing).

Auto-recharge tops up your wallet automatically when the balance drops below a threshold you set. Useful for teams that use AI heavily and don’t want to worry about running out.

Configure in Settings → AI → Wallet → Auto-recharge:

  • Threshold: when the balance drops below this amount, recharge triggers
  • Recharge amount: how much to add each time
  • Daily cap: maximum auto-recharge per day (default $50) to prevent runaway spend

If a recharge fails (declined card, insufficient funds, etc.), auto-recharge is temporarily disabled and you’re notified by email. Fix the underlying issue and re-enable manually.

In addition to the wallet balance, you can set budget caps to limit spend at more granular levels:

  • Per-request budget: maximum cost per single AI call. Blocks unusually expensive actions before they run.
  • Daily budget: maximum total AI spend per day. Resets at midnight UTC.
  • Monthly budget: maximum total AI spend per month.

When any budget is hit, further AI actions are blocked with a clear message. Users can see remaining budget in the AI panel.

Tip. Budgets are workspace-wide, meaning they apply to the whole team. If different team members have different needs, discuss budget levels together.

If you try to run an AI action when the wallet is empty and the free allowance is exhausted:

  • The action is blocked with a clear message: “Insufficient AI balance”
  • You see a prompt to top up the wallet
  • Your envelope, template, or draft is unaffected, only the AI feature is blocked

Nothing silently fails or gets charged unexpectedly, if the balance isn’t there, the call doesn’t run.

Full spend history lives in Settings → AI → History. Every AI action is logged with:

  • Timestamp
  • User who initiated it
  • Feature (summary, chat, risk review, draft, etc.)
  • Document or draft ID
  • Tokens consumed (input + output)
  • Cost in dollars (with markup)
  • Whether the cost came from free allowance or wallet

You can export the history as CSV for accounting. Admins see all users’ activity; regular users see only their own.
