Using DMpro

Sending DMs on Instagram & TikTok

How to generate and send your first message, choose between Auto-Send and manual review, and understand exactly what DMpro reads from a profile and how it behaves on each platform.

Sending your first DM takes about 30 seconds once the extension is installed. Here’s the flow from start to finish.

  1. Sign in to Instagram or TikTok in Chrome as you normally would. DMpro uses your existing browser session, so if you’re signed out it can’t send anything.
  2. Open the extension by clicking the DMpro icon in your toolbar. The popup shows your currently active prompt and a Generate button (you can also open the side panel for a persistent view).
  3. Browse to a profile, not a feed, story, or reel, a profile page. DMpro automatically detects it and reads the display name, bio, follower count, post count, and platform, then shows that data at the top of the panel.
  4. Confirm your selected prompt at the top of the extension. Click the prompt selector to switch if the active one isn’t the one you want for this outreach.
  5. Click Generate. The AI reads your prompt plus the profile data and writes a personalized message, usually in 3 to 6 seconds. You can then read it, edit it inline, regenerate it (costs another credit), or send it.
  6. Click Send. DMpro opens the profile’s DM inbox if it isn’t already open, types the message, and sends it. You’ll see a success confirmation, and the message lands in the recipient’s inbox from your own account.
  7. Your credit count drops by one for the Generate step. Sending itself doesn’t cost an extra credit, you already paid for the AI’s work.
  8. Move to the next profile and repeat: navigate, Generate, Send.
Tip: Turning on Auto-Send DM in settings merges Generate and Send into a single click, which is useful once you’re sending in volume. See “What is Auto-Send DM and how does it work?” below.

Common first-send issues

  • “Not on a supported page”: you’re not on a profile page. Navigate to instagram.com/username or tiktok.com/@username.
  • “Sign in required”: you’re signed out of Instagram or TikTok. Sign in first.
  • “Not enough credits”: you’re out of generations for this period. Wait for your reset or buy more.
  • “Message failed”: Instagram or TikTok blocked the send. See “What happens when a DM fails to send?” below.

Auto-Send DM merges the Generate and Send steps into one action. Turn it on and every click of Generate sends the message immediately. Turn it off and you get a review step before anything goes out.

Where to toggle it

Go to Dashboard → Automation → Auto-Send DM and flip the switch, or click the settings gear icon inside the extension itself. Either way, the change takes effect immediately.

What happens in each state

When it’s on: you click Generate, the AI writes the message, and DMpro automatically opens the DM inbox, types it, and sends it. There’s no confirmation click.

When it’s off: you click Generate, the message appears in the extension for review, and nothing sends until you click Send yourself.

Auto-Send is fastest and best once you trust a prompt to consistently produce good messages and you’re moving through 20+ profiles a session. Manual review is better while you’re still refining a prompt, since it lets you catch a bad message before it reaches someone.

Auto-Send doesn’t bypass DMpro’s Safety Mode caps, it still respects your daily limit and the delay between sends. It also only applies to one-off DMs sent through the extension; bulk campaigns run from the dashboard have their own separate settings.

Warning: there is no undo. Instagram and TikTok don’t let you unsend a DM through third-party tools, so once Auto-Send has sent a message, it’s delivered. If the AI’s output is empty or times out, Auto-Send won’t send anything and you’ll see an error instead, but a message that generates successfully will go out exactly as written. Be careful not to click Generate by accident when you switch profiles mid-session with Auto-Send on, it will send.

DMpro supports two ways of getting a message from generated to sent: automatic (DMpro types and sends it for you) and manual copy-paste (DMpro generates it and you send it yourself). Manual mode is triggered any time Auto-Send DM is off in Dashboard → Automation.

ModeBest forTrade-off
AutomaticStandard profile DMs, high-volume outreach, well-tested promptsCan occasionally fail if Instagram or TikTok changes their page layout, and can’t be interrupted once started
Manual copy-pasteStory replies, group DMs, video posts, or whenever automation failsSlower, more clicks per send

To send manually: highlight the generated message in the extension, copy it (Cmd+C or Ctrl+C), click Message on the profile, then paste and send.

When manual is required, not just preferred

  • Instagram Story replies: DMpro’s automation only works on the main DM flow, so story replies need a manual paste.
  • Group DMs: same reason.
  • Video posts on TikTok: messaging from a specific video uses the “Message” button on that video, not the profile, so this is manual only.

A good pattern while you’re learning a new prompt is to keep Auto-Send off and review every message, then switch it on once you’ve sent 20 to 30 DMs and are happy with the quality. Some users land in between with a “preview then send” habit: Auto-Send stays off, but they read and click Send on every message rather than copy-pasting, which is slower than Auto-Send but faster than full manual copy-paste.

Email-in-Bio Scraping reads emails out of Instagram bios so you can follow up outside of DMs. When you visit an Instagram profile with an email in its bio, DMpro extracts it and adds it to your DMpro contacts, showing it right in the extension panel so you can copy it or export it later.

DMpro looks for standard email formats ([email protected]) and can reconstruct partially obscured ones, like “contact at gmail dot com.” Emails that only exist inside an image bio aren’t supported, since this only reads text.

Where extracted emails go

Every extraction lands in Dashboard → Usage → Extracted Contacts, with the email, the Instagram handle, the date extracted, and any bio context like business type or location. From that same screen, click Export CSV to download everything in one file, ready to import into a CRM like HubSpot or Salesforce, or to add to a cold email tool.

Note: Email-in-Bio Scraping is a Professional and Enterprise feature; Free, Starter, and Growth plans don’t include it. It’s also Instagram-only, TikTok bios rarely contain emails and TikTok’s format makes extraction unreliable there.

Extraction happens automatically as you browse and doesn’t cost a separate credit, but it is rate-limited: Professional accounts get up to 500 extractions a day, Enterprise up to 2,000. Hitting the cap just means further profiles won’t have their emails extracted until the next day; your DM sending keeps working normally.

Emails posted in a public bio are, in most jurisdictions, considered public information, and DMpro only extracts what’s already visible. That said, sending marketing emails is still regulated by laws like CAN-SPAM, GDPR, and CASL, so only email people who’d reasonably want to hear from you, include an easy unsubscribe, and follow your local regulations.

When you land on an Instagram or TikTok profile, DMpro’s content script reads publicly visible data to feed the AI: display name, username, bio text, follower count, following count, post count, verified status, Instagram category (like “Fashion” or “Musician”) if it’s set, and which platform you’re on. The profile picture URL is also grabbed, but only for display inside the extension, it’s never sent to the AI.

When you click Generate, DMpro sends the AI your prompt, that profile data, and your own connected account context (like your brandID handle or campaign context). The AI has no live access to the profile itself, it only works from the snapshot DMpro captured at the moment you clicked Generate.

What DMpro does not read

  • Private posts, only the publicly visible bio and stats.
  • DM history or prior conversations with that person.
  • Stories.
  • Post captions (a common assumption, but they’re not read).
  • Following or follower lists.
  • Location tags, unless they appear in the bio text itself.
  • Email addresses in the bio, unless you have Email-in-Bio Scraping on a Professional or higher plan.

If a profile has a sparse bio and a low follower count, the AI has less to work with and messages tend to read more generic. Adding a fallback instruction to your prompt, like “if the bio is empty, mention their post count instead,” helps here. From a private profile, DMpro can still pull limited data (name, bio, follower count if shown, verified status), though you can’t DM a private account unless they follow you back anyway.

On DMpro’s own servers, only aggregated visit counts, any emails you’ve extracted (Professional+), and the text of messages you’ve generated (for your recent activity feed) are stored. The profile data itself, name, bio, follower count, is used only at Generate time and isn’t stored server-side.

DMpro works the same way conceptually on both platforms, but the DM flow, rate limits, and available profile data differ.

InstagramTikTok
DM flowMessage button opens the inbox directlyMessage often opens a separate page at tiktok.com/messages, a few more clicks
Rate limitsStricter; blocks tend to start around 40 to 50 DMs in a short window, especially to non-followersMore lenient, but still enforced, especially on new accounts
Profile dataName, username, bio, followers, following, posts, category, verified statusName, username, bio, followers, following, likes, verified status; bios tend to run shorter
Blocked-message behaviorOften silently accepted but not delivered; DMpro can’t detect this, so a “sent” status may not mean a reply is comingBlocks tend to fail visibly with an error DMpro can catch

DMpro handles both flows automatically, so you don’t need to change any settings when you switch platforms, and Safety Mode’s default 20 DMs/day cap with 3 to 6 minute delays applies safely to both. The AI adapts its writing to whichever platform you’re on without needing separate prompts, though some users add an instruction like “if {platform} is TikTok, keep it super casual with emoji” to get platform-specific tone from one prompt, or simply keep two prompts labeled “IG” and “TT.”

Reply rates vary by niche more than by platform: Instagram creators in fashion, fitness, and food tend to respond well to polished collab pitches, TikTok’s younger average audience tends to respond better to genuine, casual outreach, and on both platforms a sponsorship pitch that’s a real fit for the creator’s audience outperforms a generic one.

Instagram doesn’t publish official rate limits, but community testing points to rough safe zones: under 20 DMs a day for new accounts, 30 to 50 a day for established accounts with a few thousand followers, and higher tolerances (sometimes 100+) for highly established or verified accounts, though all of these carry some risk above their range.

DMpro defaults to conservative limits through Safety Mode, which is on by default and enforces a 20 DMs/day maximum on Instagram, a 3 to 6 minute delay between sends, and an automatic pause if Instagram signals a block. You can turn Safety Mode off in Dashboard → Automation, but we recommend leaving it on unless you fully understand the risk you’re taking on. The same 20/day default also applies to TikTok, which is more lenient than Instagram but still enforces its own limits.

DMpro watches for signals that you’re approaching a block, like slow send response times, redirects to a CAPTCHA, or “please wait” errors, and auto-pauses your campaign with an alert when it sees them.

If you do get blocked

A temporary block usually lasts 24 to 48 hours. Manual DMs from Instagram’s own app may still work but get flagged, while DMpro’s automated sends will fail with a message like “Instagram: please wait a few minutes.” Your DMpro account and credits are unaffected, only your ability to send is paused. The right response is to stop all sending immediately, wait out the 24 to 48 hours without testing sends (manual or automated, since testing extends the block), and then restart at low volume, for example 5 DMs the first day back, 10 the next, 15 after that.

Tip: the habits that keep you out of trouble are simple: keep Safety Mode on, send from an older account with a healthy follower count where possible, personalize every message rather than reusing one line 100 times, vary your prompt, and spread sends across the day instead of firing them off in a 10-minute burst.

Enterprise plans add dynamic rate limits based on your account’s history, multi-account rotation to spread load, and post-send verification to catch a block earlier.

After you click Generate, the message appears in the extension’s message area (popup or side panel), along with a character count, a Regenerate button, and a Send button when Auto-Send is off. This preview is your chance to check the message before it goes anywhere.

You can click into the message area and edit it inline: add or remove a sentence, fix a name that came out wrong, add a detail the AI missed, or drop in an emoji. Any edits only apply to this one message; your saved prompt itself doesn’t change.

Instagram and TikTok both accept fairly long DMs, but the sweet spot for read and reply rates is around 200 characters, and the preview shows your running character count as you type. If you don’t like what the AI produced, click Regenerate for a new attempt (this costs one more credit); common reasons include a wrong fact, an off tone, or a message that feels too generic. If regenerating keeps producing similar-quality results, that’s usually a sign the prompt itself needs work rather than the individual message.

If you decide not to message this profile at all, just don’t click Send, navigate away or close the extension. The Generate step still spent a credit, but nothing is sent. If DMpro’s automation fails, or you’re on a profile where it can’t run at all (story replies, group DMs), you can copy the previewed message and paste it manually into the DM inbox instead.

Note: with Auto-Send on, the preview only flashes for about a second before sending, so you may not have time to catch anything you don’t like. Turn Auto-Send off if you want to review every message before it goes out.

Recent generated messages stay in your Dashboard’s Activity Log for 30 days, so you can look back at what you sent to whom.

When a send fails, whether from a platform block, a page layout change, or a network hiccup, the extension shows a red error banner with a specific reason where possible, and usually a Retry button. Typical messages include “Instagram temporarily blocked this send,” “Could not find the message button,” “Session expired, please sign in again,” and “Network error, please try again.”

Failure typeWhat to do
Rate limitInstagram or TikTok has temporarily blocked your account. Stop sending and wait 24 to 48 hours.
StructuralDMpro couldn’t find the message button because the page layout changed. Update the extension.
SessionYour Instagram or TikTok session expired. Sign in again.
NetworkYour connection dropped mid-send. Just retry.
CreditYou’re out of generations. Buy more or wait for your reset.

Whether a failed send costs a credit depends on where it failed: if the AI generated a message but the send itself failed, the generation credit is already spent (sending is a separate step). If generation failed outright, no credit is charged. Because most failures happen at the send step, it’s worth testing your setup on a low-stakes profile first.

Depending on the failure, you can Retry the same message and profile, Regenerate a new message first (costing a credit) and then retry the send, or copy the message from the preview and paste it manually into the DM inbox. One-off sends through the extension don’t auto-retry, you’ll need to click Retry yourself; bulk campaigns run from the dashboard do retry automatically based on their own settings.

Instagram tends to block accounts that send too fast, repeat the same message, get reported by recipients, or are very new, all of which Safety Mode’s defaults are built to keep you well clear of. If you do get blocked: stop all sending, wait 24 to 48 hours without testing sends (manual or automated), and restart at a lower volume, for example 5 DMs the first day back and 10 the next. Your DMpro account and credits aren’t affected, only your ability to send is temporarily paused.

If sends keep failing even after retrying and updating the extension, contact support at brandid.app/contact-us with your DMpro email, the profile URL you were on, a screenshot of the failure banner, and your Chrome version and OS.

Not directly. DMpro is built for profile pages, not for individual Reels or TikTok videos. When you’re watching a Reel (instagram.com/reel/CODE) or a TikTok video (tiktok.com/@user/video/CODE), DMpro’s content script doesn’t activate on those URLs at all.

Getting to the profile from a Reel or video

Click the account’s username or profile picture at the top of an Instagram Reel, or the username under a TikTok video, and you’ll land on their profile. Once you’re there, DMpro activates automatically and you can Generate and Send as normal.

Instagram and TikTok both put a “Message” or “DM” button directly on the Reel or video itself, but DMpro doesn’t automate sends from those buttons, so reaching out from the content directly means clicking Message manually and pasting your DMpro-generated text. The full flow looks like this:

  1. Watch the Reel or video and click through to the profile.
  2. DMpro activates in the extension.
  3. Click Generate, then copy the message.
  4. Go back to the Reel or video if you want to reference it.
  5. Click Message on the Reel or video and paste.

It’s a couple more clicks than a normal profile send, but it works. If you want your DM to actually attach the post or Reel itself, use the share icon on it, choose “Send in DM” or “Send to,” pick the recipient, and paste your DMpro-generated text as the accompanying message. That attach step is always manual; DMpro handles the message text, you handle the attachment.

Tip: for high-volume outreach, stick to profile-based DMing, which DMpro fully automates. Save the manual content-reference flow for one-off, high-value pitches where mentioning their specific post or video is worth the extra clicks.
