Buffer Review (2026): Features, Pricing, Pros & Cons

Buffer is one of the simplest and best-known social media scheduling tools, and one of the few with a real free plan. It started in 2010 as a small side project, grew into a fully remote company with a public dashboard of its own revenue and salaries, and today sells publishing, a comment inbox, analytics and a link-in-bio page. What makes it different from most tools in this category is its pricing: you pay per connected channel, not per user.

This review covers what Buffer does, what its Free, Essentials and Team plans include, what you actually pay for a team with 10 channels, where it falls short and who it suits. Every product and pricing fact comes from Buffer’s own pricing page, help center, changelog and shareholder updates, checked on 7 October 2026. Where Buffer’s own pages disagree or do not say, we flag it.

Key Takeaways
  • What it is: a simple social media scheduling and engagement tool with 12 channels, a comment inbox called Community, Insights analytics, an AI Assistant and a Start Page link in bio.

  • Strengths: a free plan, easy interface, multi-channel posts, unlimited AI on every plan, an MCP server for Claude and ChatGPT, and an API on every plan.
  • Limits: no DMs, no social listening, limited analytics history on Free, Essentials has one user, and approvals need the Team plan.
  • Reputation: 4.3 out of 5 on G2 from 1,041 reviews, praised for ease of use and criticized for analytics and failed posts.

What Is Buffer?

Buffer describes its mission as making social media easier for small businesses, creators and teams. Its core is a queue: you set posting times for each channel, write a post once, choose which channels it goes to, and Buffer publishes it. Around that sit a visual calendar, an ideas inbox, templates and an AI Assistant for writing and repurposing posts.

In 2025 and 2026 Buffer added two bigger pieces. Community, launched in late 2025, is a comment inbox that brings comments from 10 channels into one place. Insights, rebuilt in April 2026, replaced the older Analyze tool. Buffer does not offer social listening, competitor tracking, DMs or a ticketing system, and it positions Community as lightweight rather than a tool for support teams.

Buffer is also unusually open about its business. Its December 2025 shareholder update reports 22.46 million dollars of revenue for 2025, up 31 percent, and a net income of 2.5 million dollars, its strongest year since 2018. It reported 69,760 customers in December 2025. Buffer’s own website also shows other, undated figures, so we use the dated update.

Key Features of Buffer

1. Publishing and scheduling

Buffer publishes to 12 channels: Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, Threads, Bluesky, YouTube Shorts, Pinterest, Google Business Profile, Mastodon, Substack Notes and X. It does not support Snapchat, Reddit, WhatsApp, Telegram or Twitch, and it publishes only YouTube Shorts, not long videos.

You create a post once in a single composer, select several channels and customize the caption, hashtags, link and time for each. Each channel’s version becomes its own post. Every channel has a queue with recurring posting slots in its own time zone, and the visual calendar lets you drag posts to reschedule. Drafts are available on every plan.

On the Free plan you can have 10 scheduled posts per channel. Paid plans have no stated limit, but a fair-use cap of 5,000 scheduled posts per channel applies, which Buffer says only a tiny fraction of accounts approach. Tags are limited to 3 on Free and 250 on paid plans. First comments, channel groups, a hashtag manager and custom video covers are paid features.

Bulk upload by CSV is available on every plan, including Free. Free accounts can upload 10 posts per channel at a time and paid accounts up to 100. It handles text and single-image posts only, with no video or carousels, and it excludes YouTube.

ChannelText limitDaily posting cap

LinkedIn3,000 characters50
TikTok2,200 with video25
Threads500 characters250
Bluesky300 characters100
Pinterest500 description25 verified

Daily caps count only posts scheduled through Buffer in a rolling 24 hours. Buffer’s own pages disagree on which channels publish automatically and which send a reminder, so check the help article for the channel and format you use. Instagram posts that use music, link stickers, product tags or collaborators, for example, fall back to notification publishing.

2. Community: the comment inbox

Community pulls comments from Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Threads, Bluesky, X, TikTok, Google Business, YouTube and Mastodon into one view. Features include filters, notifications, a comment score, saved replies, AI reply suggestions, turning a comment into a post and a post view that highlights unanswered comments. It is included on every plan.

There are real limits. Buffer’s Community does not handle direct messages, Pinterest and Substack have no engagement support, and there is no assignment, case management or service-level tracking. Free accounts get 1 saved reply and 5 AI reply suggestions a week, while paid plans are unlimited. Since July 2026, Community access can be set separately from publishing access.

3. Insights: analytics

Insights, launched in April 2026, shows performance across all channels or per channel, with AI-written takeaways, tag filters and saved views. It covers Instagram professional accounts, Facebook Pages, X, LinkedIn, TikTok, Pinterest, Threads, Bluesky, YouTube, Mastodon and Substack, but not Google Business.

The Free plan keeps 30 days of history. Essentials and Team have unlimited history, custom date ranges, a performance overview, custom analytics, reports and exports to CSV, Markdown and PDF. Branded reports with your own logo are on Team only. Data limits come from the networks: X does not provide impressions, Bluesky data refreshes about every 10 days, and Reels and Stories on Facebook are not covered.

4. AI Assistant and the MCP server

Buffer says its AI Assistant is unlimited on every plan, including Free, for creating, refining and repurposing content. It is built on OpenAI’s API, and Buffer says only the text you type into the assistant is shared with OpenAI. Buffer has not published details on AI image generation, so we do not claim it.

In June 2026 Buffer launched an MCP server that lets Claude, ChatGPT and Perplexity work with your account, and it also connects to tools such as Cursor, Zapier and n8n. Buffer’s API is GraphQL and available on every plan, so you can create and edit posts, ideas and tags from your own tools.

5. Start Page, apps, extensions and integrations

Start Page is Buffer’s link-in-bio page, launched in 2021. It is on every plan, but it counts as one of your channels, so on paid plans it is billed like any other channel. Buffer has iOS and Android apps and browser extensions for Chrome, Safari, Opera and Edge. It lists 24 integrations, including Canva, Bitly, Zapier, Google Drive, Dropbox, WordPress, Claude and ChatGPT, and says Zapier connects it to more than 7,000 apps.

6. Teams, permissions and security

Essentials is for one user. The Team plan allows unlimited users with roles and per-channel access, either full access or needs approval, and a draft approval workflow. Team-wide two-factor authentication can be required since July 2026. We could not verify multi-step approvals, a white-label client portal, single sign-on, SOC 2 or ISO 27001, so we do not claim them. Support is by email and a knowledge base on every plan, and Buffer’s own Open page reports a first response within 2 hours over the previous 90 days.

Buffer’s pricing page opens on the yearly view, so the headline prices of 5 and 10 are annual-billing rates. Monthly billing is 6 and 12 per channel. Annual billing saves about 20 percent. Volume discounts apply above 10 channels, and Buffer’s examples show that 25 channels on Team cost 180 a month on monthly billing or 150 annual. Nonprofits can get 50 percent off. A 14-day trial runs on the Team plan, and if you do not pay you drop to Free. Refunds are available within 7 days for monthly plans and 30 days for annual plans.

How this compares
Per-channel pricing favors people with a few channels and teams with many users. Ten channels and five teammates cost the same on Team as ten channels and one teammate. It becomes expensive per head if you manage dozens of client channels without volume tiers. Remember that Start Page and the three channels you used on Free all become paid channels when you upgrade.

What Users Say About Buffer

On G2, Buffer scores 4.3 out of 5 from 1,041 reviews as of 7 October 2026. This is third-party opinion, not our own testing.

What reviewers praiseWhat reviewers criticize
Simple, intuitive dashboardLimited analytics
Easy scheduling across channelsFailed posts, sometimes reported only in the mobile app
Free plan and help from supportCost rises with many channels
Pay only for the channels you useLimits on tagging and Meta data for some channels

Trustpilot is more mixed, with a score of about 3.6 from 123 reviews and complaints about billing, renewals and unstable posting. That figure comes from a summary of the page, so treat it as lower confidence. We could not verify Capterra because the page was behind a bot check.

How to Get Started With Buffer

  • Step 1. Start free. Create an account and connect up to 3 channels.
  • Step 2. Set your queue. Choose posting slots for each channel.
  • Step 3. Write once, publish to many. Select channels in the composer and edit each version.
  • Step 4. Try Community. Reply to comments and test saved replies.
  • Step 5. Check Insights. Look at 30 days of data before deciding to upgrade.
  • Step 6. Count your channels. Multiply by the per-channel price, including Start Page.

Final Verdict

Buffer is the easiest tool in this category to start with. It has a real free plan, honest per-channel pricing, a clean interface, unlimited AI and an unusually open company. It is not a full social suite: there is no social listening, no DMs, no case management, and its analytics history is short on the free plan.

Choose it if you are a creator, small business or small team that wants reliable scheduling at a low cost. Skip it if you need advanced customer care, listening or enterprise security evidence. Start on the Free plan, connect your real channels and compare it with the tools in our guide to the best social media management tools.
