AI Contract Studio

The AI Contract Studio is signID’s dedicated interface for drafting contracts with AI assistance. Rather than uploading a pre-existing PDF, you start from a blank slate (or a template) and let AI help you write.

Three drafting modes:

• Wizard: answer structured questions and get a draft
• Prompt: describe what you need in plain language
• Template: start from one of 15 built-in contract types

The Contract Studio ships with 15 pre-defined contract types, each with a wizard tuned to the specific document:

• NDA (mutual and one-way)
• Service agreement
• Employment agreement
• Contractor / freelancer agreement
• Consulting agreement
• Sales agreement
• Purchase agreement
• Vendor agreement
• Rental / lease agreement
• Partnership agreement
• Offer letter
• Termination letter
• Waiver / release
• Statement of work
• General agreement (open-ended)

Each type is a starting point, not a finished contract. Every draft should be reviewed (ideally by legal counsel) before sending.

The wizard mode walks you through structured questions specific to your contract type. For example, for a service agreement, the wizard asks:

• Who is the client? Who is the provider?
• What services are being provided?
• Payment terms (fixed fee, hourly, milestones)?
• Duration and termination conditions?
• Governing law?

As you answer, the AI generates the corresponding clauses. You see the draft grow section by section.

Prompt mode is for people who prefer to describe what they need in one paragraph. Example:

“Draft a 6-month freelance contract between Acme Corp and Jane Doe for graphic design services. Monthly retainer of $3,000, unlimited revisions on assigned work, IP fully transferred to Acme on payment, 30-day termination notice by either party, governed by California law.”

The AI parses the prompt, identifies the contract type, extracts the parameters, and generates a full draft. Faster than the wizard when you know exactly what you want.

You can also start from an existing template (see Templates & Bulk Send) and use AI to modify specific clauses rather than draft from scratch.

This is useful when you have a standard contract you use repeatedly but occasionally need to customize for a specific deal (different governing law, unusual payment terms, added exclusivity clause, etc.).

The AI doesn’t just generate and stop. If it needs more information to draft a specific clause, it asks a clarifying question in a conversational way:

“You mentioned monthly payments. Should the contract include a late-payment penalty? If so, what percentage per month?”

You answer, the AI incorporates your response, and drafting continues. This back-and-forth catches gaps you might not have thought about upfront.

Once the initial draft is generated, you land in the draft workspace: a full-featured editor with the contract on the main canvas and AI actions in a side panel.

You can:

• Edit any clause directly (like a normal text editor)
• Reorder sections by drag-and-drop
• Add or remove clauses
• Apply per-clause AI actions (see next entry)
• Save intermediate drafts and return later

Every change is auto-saved. You can undo/redo and see version history if you make a change and want to revert.

Right-click any clause in the draft workspace (or use the side panel) to run per-clause AI actions:

• Rewrite: reword the clause in different tone (formal, plain, concise)
• Expand: add more detail or specific examples
• Shorten: compress to a shorter version
• Explain: get a plain-language explanation of what the clause means
• Alternatives: generate 2-3 alternative phrasings

Useful when a specific clause feels off but you can’t quite pinpoint why. Ask for alternatives, compare, pick the best one.

Before converting your draft to a signable PDF, run AI review. This is different from Document AI’s risk review (which runs on uploaded PDFs). Contract Studio review is optimized for drafts and flags:

• Missing sections that are typical for this contract type
• Inconsistencies between clauses (e.g. payment terms in section 3 conflict with schedule in section 7)
• Unclear or ambiguous phrasing
• Undefined terms (referenced but never defined)
• Common legal risks for the contract type

Each flag comes with a suggested fix. Apply, dismiss, or edit as you see fit.

The clause library is a workspace-level collection of clauses you’ve saved for reuse. When you’re happy with a specific clause (a well-crafted indemnification clause, a favorite governing-law paragraph), save it to the library with a name.

In future drafts:

• Drag and drop clauses from the library into new contracts
• Use AI to adapt library clauses to the new context
• Share the library across your team (all admins can add and use clauses)

Over time, the library becomes your team’s institutional memory for contract language.

When your draft is ready, click Convert to PDF. signID renders the draft as a PDF and creates a new envelope with the PDF pre-loaded. From there you:

• Place signer fields where the signatures go
• Add recipients
• Send as you would any envelope

The draft remains in the Contract Studio for future edits or reuse, so you can send multiple envelopes from the same draft if needed.
